Christina Mayer

19-26 August, Course and board from 1,935

Hosted by Christina Mayer

We all have clothes in our wardrobe that we simply can’t part with and they sit on hangers year after year, resisting all our best intentions to de-clutter. If this sounds familiar to you then our workshop with fashion designer Christine Mayer is for you. Bring your once-loved – but now rarely worn – pieces with you to the workshop and you’ll learn to reinvent them so that these new, one of a kind garments can become the centerpieces of your wardrobe again.

Berlin-based Christine has built a fashion career on re-purposing clothing and breathing new life into old garments. She is a pioneer of three-dimensional free draping with fabric, an art form she has adapted and developed from her studies in classical Japanese drapery.

Working directly onto a mannequin that is adjusted to your body shape, you’ll learn from Christine how to drape and stitch in an artful way to create original items of clothing that will fit you like a second skin. This fresh and liberating way of making clothes brings with it a new set of rules which has far more in common with sculpting than dress making. It won’t take long for you to understand the principles of working three-dimensionally and you’ll enjoy the process of allowing your garments to evolve.

You might have a blouse, old-fashioned and unworn now, but made from a fabric you love, or you might have something with an embroidery or stitched detail you find beautiful… or an old belt or buckle that has always appealed to you. As long as you have a connection to the piece of clothing or accessory you should bring it with you to the workshop.

Midway through the week we’ll enjoy a day of dyeing with woad - the original blue made popular in medieval times -  and have the chance to use these dyed pieces in your work. Add to your stock of materials some locally-sourced French vintage clothing, lace or decorative textiles that you might find on our outing to a fleamarket and you’ll want for nothing.  Also part of the week is a visit to the Sunday morning market in the medieval town of St Antonin-Noble-Val.
