Textile artist, Deidre Scherer is to be presented with the 2008 Humanities Award by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine for her evocative, painterly tableaux on the theme of mortality. Two exhibitions Surrounded by Family and Friends and The Last Year are on display at the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala, Florida until 3 February. The application deadline is looming for the annual Embroiderers' Guild Scholarships. Two awards of £1000 will be given to embroiderers to develop their work. The survival of the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre in Egypt is under serious threat from rising water. Established by architect, Ramses Wissa Wassef half a century ago to encourage children to engage in tapestry weaving, it now produces artworks that are admired around the world.
