NEW YEAR'S NEWS
Happy New Year! It’s so easy at this time of year to prioritise our bodies with resolutions to take more exercise or eat well, but what about promoting inner harmony? Why not take time this year to relax and find that elusive work-life balance? In 2007 we will continue to put all our energies into Selvedge and hope it will be an oasis of reflection on the inspirational world of textiles.

We are building a resource, so please send your web address to marketing@selvedge.org after you have added the Selvedge web address www.selvedge.org to your own links page, and we will be happy to reciprocate.
Also don't forget to browse our Object Catalogue for collection of textiles www.selvedge.org

This month we focus on the importance of textiles for charities. UNICEF are still working to help those devastated by the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan to rebuild their lives. A recent consignment of winter kits including blankets and quilts will help homeless victims get through another harsh winter but the long term picture is still bleak. Contact UNICEF to make a donation www.unicef.org.uk. VSO www.vso.org.uk are calling for a marketing expert to develop a five year strategy for Mongolia's textile industry. Knowledge of cashmere and yak knitwear are a prerequisite. E-mail your CV to enquiry@vso.org.uk. Also, in Paris, the French charity supporting autism, Autistes san Frontiers benefited from the sale of Georges Braque's tapestry Les Oiseaux Bleus, www.autistessansfrontieres.com.

Embroiderers' Guild are now inviting applications for their annual scholarships. An award of £1,000 each is offered to two embroiderers to further their practice. Application forms must be returned by 9 February www.embroiderersgui ld.com. Plus, there’s a call for entries for the 2007 Surface Design Association Conference in Kansas (31 May-1 June). Deadlines are 1 February for the Fashion Show and 1 March for the Member and Student Shows www.surfacedesign.org
The rich quilting legacy of four generations of African-American women in rural Alabama has been celebrated by the U.S. Postal Service. The Quilts of Gee's Bend commemorative postage stamps have been issued as part of the American Treasures Series. www.usps.com
