Caroline Hwang may live in sunny Southern California but her quilted illustrations offer a glimpse of a dark side. Caroline uses traditional techniques to document modern life. As the wonderful art project, Tiny Showcase, put it "a lover's spat, a forest, a romantic rendezvous, all merit documentation with Hwang's needles and her thread."

THE BEST AND WORST OF TIMES
Approaching the New Year with a sense of optimism is vital and will see you though the first two weeks at least... Of course having something to look forward to always helps. Here at Selvedge we are excited about the outcome of our office renovation and trying to overlook the fact that work currently takes place in a building site. It’s all about delayed gratification – which leads neatly to the fact that this year Selvedge will not be producing a January issue. We’re sorry to make you wait, the delay won’t affect subscriptions and we’ll try to make sure the March issue is worth waiting for! www.selvedge.org.

A cause for celebration, the Selvedge drygoods sale is now on! It's the perfect opportunity to buy those objects you have been considering or longing for... Discounts extend to subscriptions, selected back issues and books. A one year subscription in the UK is just £40 so it’s the perfect time to subscribe or renew. Sale ends 28 February 2009. The International Year of Natural Fibres will be officially launched on 22 January 2009 at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). Since the 1960s, the use of synthetic fibres has increased and natural fibres have lost their market share. The FAO hopes the title will raise consumer awareness and stimulate demand for natural fibres. www.naturalfibres2009.org
