Charlene Mullen considers nothing taboo. "It is the process of 'making' that I love", says Charlene. To create her modern embroidered designs with a historical edge she draws on subjects as diverse as Victorian christening gowns and prison tattoos. See her work at 100% Design, 24-27 September, Earls Court, London.

THE HARDEST WORD
We always endeavour to get each issue of Selvedge to you promptly but I'm afraid the Autumn issue will be a few weeks late. We're sorry for the delay. When it does arrive you can expect a burst of colour, new ideas and the best of Scotland's textile talent. In the meantime we're offering 20% off all books in the Selvedge bookshop in our 'back to school' sale so you needn't be stuck for something to read.... www.selvedge.org.

Of all the items on our list of drygoods our favourites are always "notions and sundries", the words alone conjure up old-fashioned haberdashery shops. And we have a wonderful new batch of them in the Selvedge shop, from the pretty frivolity of our patterned ribbons and buttons to more practical items such as thimbles, measuring tapes and scissors. Stop by the shop to see them in person or visit our website www.selvedge.org
Join the birthday celebrations at the Linen Shop. Fran White's original designs will be on display. There will be demonstrations of weaving, printing and spinning with linen. Enjoy a refreshing drink, a slice of cake or a canape and meet the team in a spectacular countryside setting. Special offers available at the Shop, 11am-7pm on 10, 11, 12 September. www.thelinenshop.biz
