September 2007

150 leading designers were asked to submit a page for the V&A’s 150th anniversary album. This fairy-like figure is fashion designer, Ben de Lisi’s contribution www.vam.ac.uk. You can admire Ben’s catwalk creations too, on the first day of London Fashion Week, 15 September 2pm, BFC Tent www.londonfashionweek.co.uk.

The Knitting and Stitching Show... the definitive event for anyone with a love of stitch presents a fascinating mix of designer makers, workshops and exhibitions from artists such as Padmaja Krishnan, winner of Quilt 2007 (above). Organizers Creative Exhibitions are offering 10 pairs of free tickets to Selvedge readers! Simply send us an e-mail with your name and address, marked ‘Knitting and Stitching Show Ticket Offer’ to news@selvedge.org and the first 10 we receive will get to go for free! NEC Birmingham, 13-16 September. For tour dates visit www.twistedthread.com

Tent London... See Katja Behre’s ‘neo-romantic’ wall coverings at the Truman Brewery. Her designs have evolved from childhood memories of playing in the forest and she speaks of them with fairy-tale nuance. Eccentric she may be, but with projects for Colefax and Fowler and Designers Guild under her belt, her label Elli Popp is one to watch. 20-23 September www.tentlondon.co.uk

YnFx... the leading provider of textile market intelligence and market development is a valuable information source. Get daily news, weekly price trends of fibers and intermediates and in-depth value chain reports. You can even trade all types of yarns and fibers at the click of a mouse. www.YnFx.com

DESIGN FEVER
You’re recharged. It’s time to forget the beach, slip on those Manolo’s and hit the shows. This is the month when the design community is droning with activity and the capital is a hive of handpicked talent. With London Fashion Week and the London Design Festival happening simultaneously (to name only two) we are spoilt for choice. Selvedge will be in the thick of it of course. Come and visit us at 100% Design (stand A130). You can even register for the show via our own personalised link www.100percentdesign.co.uk/selvedge and if you do it before 14 September you’ll get free entry to the show - (saving you £20)! We’ll see you there....

French designer Sophie Digard creates artworks that beg to be touched - curious crochet flowers with velvety soft buds, each leaf and petal knitted individually. Alongside her super sweet roses are beautifully crafted jewellery, scarves and berets in intricately patterned stripes and swirls, reminiscent of a painting by Klimt. Visit our object catalogue to order one of her pieces from £45 (excludes p&p) www.selvedge.org

Hidden Art is busy this month! Not only are they showing off the best of their work at 100% Design (Earls Court 2, 20-23 September) but they’ll also be hosting the 8th Hidden Art Forum, ‘Anticipating the Future’. With panel discussions, ‘speed networking’ and eminent speakers such as Jeremy Myerson Professor of Design Studies at the RCA it promises to be a frenetic and stimulating event. 26 September www.hiddenartlondon.co.uk. Don’t forget to check out the new goodies in their online shop too! www.hiddenartshop.com

Another online boutique to catch our eye is stylish www.luxeadornment.com. The Bangalore based company prides itself on producing simple, sculptural ‘wearable art’ and with a clothing collection that wraps and drapes around the body in linen and vivid silks, space-dyed stoles and jewellery in hand-made paper and wood, their fusion of natural materials and modern design is a must see. For a preview of their new collection (pictured) contact them via their website.

Hot off the press... From the theatricals of the catwalk to the real thing...an intriguing site-specific play entitled ‘Quality’ will be staged at Tracey Neuls’TN29 shoe boutique during London Fashion Week. Canadian director Kathleen Weiss highlights our obsessions with beauty, sex and of course, shoes. 6-23 September www.qualitytheplay.co.uk...another shop that will be dazzling us this month is the Society of Designer Craftsmen (SDC) Gallery. Opening on 7 September, and extolling the traditional values of the 120 year old national treasure - craftsmanship and innovation - it will nevertheless have its finger firmly on the pulse in trendy Shoreditch. What better place to browse, buy or commission work from some of Britain’s most skilled makers? www.SDCgallery.org.uk
