Born in Japan and now based in London, Akiko Hirai studied ceramic design at Central Saint Martins. From her studio in The Chocolate Factory in Stoke Newington, she has been blending Japanese and British pottery traditions for almost twenty years. She also finds the time to teach others, and is currently the Head of Ceramics at Kensington and Chelsea College. Hirai’s ceramics highlight a contrast between rough clay and smoothness of glaze. Her organic style comes from allowing the clay to “show how it wants to be fired itself”.
