Until Thursday 19th December, we will feature a different competition prize on the blog every day, it's Selvedge's 12 Days of Christmas. You have until 6pm GMT on 19th December to enter all the competitions.
Today, we feature Bernina, the world’s leading manufacturer of premium sewing machines. The sewing company is offering one person the chance to win a Bernette 37, a machine that offers a wide range of features and impressive stitch quality. A compact computerised model with simple operation and robust construction, it benefits from the same rigorous attention to detail that has become the hallmark of Bernina over more than 125 years.
Founded in 1893 by Karl Friedrich Gegauf, the inventor of the hemstitching machine, Bernina remains a family-owned business and has stayed true to the spirit of its founder. When the Great Depression led to a decline in demand for hemstitch machines, Karl Friedrich’s son Fritz, inspired by his wife’s struggles with her home sewing machine, worked day and night to launch his first domestic machine.
When Fritz’s daughter Odette Ueltschi Gegauf took over, she became one of the first women in Switzerland to serve as President of a large company.
Odette was passionate about meeting the needs of the sewist and committed the company to develop new features that would benefit the user. Now the company is under the leadership of Odette’s son, Hanspeter. Having inherited the same passion for innovation and creativity, he has also ensured that Bernina machines remain treasured companions for sewists around the world.
