Selvedge — Artists and Designers

An extension of the print magazine’s tone of respect, intelligence and joy in the world of textiles, our blog is a daily contribution to the Selvedge conversation. Artists and Designers

Last month we wrote about Bamford’s summer competition: From Land to Craft: A collection inspired by the Daylesford Estate. The competition called for artists to submit works that incorporated natural materials and reflected the beauty of the local surroundings. Now we are pleased to say that the winner has been announced: textile artist Ellie Williams. Ellie’s designs feature natural dyes made from plants and berries, which are used to hand-dye linen using shibori techniques. The judges were impressed by her consideration of the Bamford ethos of sustainability and respect for the environment, as well as an aesthetic that was clearly...

“Natural, raw beauty touches our souls.... and transforms us and our world by connecting us to the best in ourselves. It is essential to our very cores.” Cara May learned to knit when she was just eight years old – much to the amusement of her friends. What was originally a pastime eventually developed into a career, after May decided that a fast-paced job in the construction industry was not for her. She now has a studio in the River Arts District of Asheville, in North Carolina, USA. She is not the only maker who is based in the area, as...

Artists and Designers Shops

At Selvedge, we love independence. Often featuring independent designers and shops in our magazine, we like to support people and places that express personality and pursue creativity in a mass-produced world. This is why we are very proud that Selvedge magazine has a new stockist: Bon Boutique in Tucson, Arizona. We feature clothing by Bon in the current Endeavour issue, but the mother-daughter duo behind the shop also deserves some attention. Bonnie and Crystal Flynt have worked together for twelve years now. Although neither of them have any formal education in design, they have created a beautiful lifestyle boutique with a unique aesthetic...

Hut Up

Artists and Designers Selvedge

In anticipation of Easter weekend, our Highgate shop is now home to a colony of charming felted wool rabbits from Berlin based label Hut Up. Established in 1993 by designer Christine Birkle, the company creates  a range of  original and unusual felt products, combining traditional techniques and the finest wool. Reflecting the natural colour variations in sheep fleece, the wool used for these rabbits is undyed. Each item is carefully felted by hand, using the finest soap. As a result, the wool is transformed into a wonderfully soft material,  then moulded into organic, delightfully seamless forms. Hut Up also produces a range of...

Folk artist Julie Arkell has created a world of whimsical beings for us to enjoy. Inspired by her daydreams each quirky creature she makes takes at least two weeks as there are many drying stages in between the layering of papier mâché. Interestingly the inside of her playful sculptures is made entirely from pages of The Guardian newspaper, whilst the outside is covered in pre-1950's literature that Julie picks up from various second hand book stores. After the figure is fully crafted they are dressed in made- to- measure hand sewn, embroidered or knitted clothes and all of them have a little quote or line...
