17-24 August 2019, Claire Wellesley-Smith, Slow Stitch, Mindful and Contemplative Textiles

Chateau Dumas, week-long workshop, prices from €1975

Hosted by Claire Wellesley-Smith

Claire Wellesley-Smith is an artist, writer and researcher concerned with slow craft practices and engagement with personal and community heritage. She uses dyes created from home-grown and locally foraged plants and works on reclaimed cloth using slow stitch based processes.

Our mindful week will use the landscape around Chateau Dumas as inspiration, beginning with a walk to observe the rolling countryside around the Chateau and its marks and mending. Claire will help you to understand how these details communicate the histories of industry and making in the area.

Participants will begin a stitch journal, a daily textile practice that offers space for thinking and reflection.  You will work on this at the beginning of each teaching day at the Chateau. Workshop sessions include block printing and the use of mordant pastes to produce prints on fabrics ready for natural dyeing. You will engage with sources of local colour available in the area, make your own dyes and explore the potential of other traditional dyes. Using your stitch journal as inspiration and a palette of natural colour, mordant prints and hand-dyed threads you will begin to make a pieced, stitched, layered work that evokes a quality or sense of place informed by this special setting.

The group will be encouraged to take note of natural dyeing techniques that can be used at home and to make connections between cloth, season and colour so they can continue with their practice.

During the week you'll have an opportunity to spend a day dying cloth samples with local woad expert Denise Lambert; these may then be incorporated and further developed into your own work.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience and will include time spent both inside and outside the studio.
