For 12 Days of Christmas 2019, Mourne Textiles is delighted to offer a choice of one of its handwoven Mourne Classic Blankets - Charcoal, Silver Grey or Blue.
Mourne Classic is made from a wool and mohair mix that creates a lightweight tweed that exudes warmth and softness. The fabric has a distinctive texture and balance from the warp, which is set up with different weighted yarns that are unevenly threaded. Designer Gerd Hay-Edie likened the rhythm of the fabric and the oscillations in texture and tone to the continuously shifting position of the tide.
Mourne Textiles is a design-led manufacturer of handwoven products based in County Down. For three generations its master-weavers have produced the mid-century visions of Norwegian design pioneer and founder, Gerd Hay-Edie. Now led by Gerd’s grandson Mario Sierra, the company creates contemporary home furnishings inspired by a rich weaving heritage, rooted in the landscape and community of Northern Ireland – but with a contemporary, international, collaborative outlook. By harnessing the skills and traditions of the past with a modern, contemporary aesthetic, Mourne Textiles creates handwoven scarves, rugs and homeware products that acknowledge the rich heritage of weaving in Northern Ireland while always maintaining modern relevance.
Weaving is at the heart of everything that Mourne Textiles does, championing small-scale manufacturing. As well as employing locally, the company runs apprenticeships in weaving and teaches hand weaving to a new generation, thus keeping time-honoured skills alive. Rooted in the Mourne Mountains, the stunning landscape informs the company's approach and is reflected in the tones and textures of all that it produces.
