Ekta Kaul is an award winning textile artist and an experienced educator based in London. She creates embroidered maps based on personal narratives and a small number of colourful wearables. Ekta’s textiles are imbued with character, they speak of exceptional hand craftsmanship, careful attention to detail and a sensitive use of materials & colours. Ekta’s creative voice in rooted in the plural - a unique amalgamation of her Indian heritage and British training. Her work is held in several private collections and can be seen at select galleries in the UK and abroad including Liberty’s, Contemporary Applied Arts, The New Craftsmen, Ruthin Craft Centre, The Conran Shop Tokyo amongst others. She has received awards from the Crafts Council and the Arts Council, England & was the finalist in Jerwood Makers Open 2019. She works from her studio at Cockpit Arts in Bloomsbury, Central London.
Learn to embroider a map of the place that has a special meaning for you under the guidance of textile artist Ekta Kaul. You can choose to express through stitch current places for instance the town you live in, your favourite park or a place that exists only in memory.
You will begin the day with drawing and developing your map artwork. You will learn how to curate your map, adding locations that are personally meaningful and geographical features that give the place its special character. You will experiment with stitches to create pattern and texture in your map. Ekta will offer individual help and feedback. The emphasis would be on developing your ideas. She will share her creative process and bring illustrative samples. By the end of the workshop you will have the skills and confidence to develop your map further.
Please bring a reference map along. Choose one that you like eg Ordinance Survey Map, Google Maps, a vintage one or one you have drawn. All materials are included- hoop, threads, a selection of fabrics. However please bring
your sewing kit and any special threads or fabrics you wish to work with.
