24-31 August 2019, Carla and Jeremy Bonner, Bag of Tricks, Contemporary Leatherwork

Chateau Dumas week-long workshop, prices from €1975

Hosted by Carla and Jeremy Bonner

With backgrounds in sculpture and librarianship, designers Carla and Jeremy launched Bonner Leather Studio in 2015. They use traditional tools and techniques to make leather bags and accessories, each piece entirely hand-stitched.

During the week at Chateau Dumas, Jeremy and Carla will introduce you to the hand tools and techniques needed to work with vegetable tanned leather. You'll learn a good base of core skills including selecting and cutting leather, pattern making and using templates. You'll then learn hand-stitching techniques, how to fit buckles, fixings, straps, flat and rolled handles.

After learning the basics, you'll try out some of your new skills by making a triangular coin purse and a three-piece moulded purse and then you'll practice all your newly mastered techniques to make a full leather bag.

Working with leather is a tactile experience, and the three projects show how it can be worked in different ways.
