Chateau Dumas, week-long workshop, prices from €1975
Hosted by Nicola Cliffe of Madder Cutch & Co
Chemistry teacher-turned natural dye specialist, Nicola Cliffe is known for designing and printing beautiful, sustainable furnishing fabrics on linen.
During our week-long workshop Nicola will guide you through her process of screen printing with a palette of natural dyes and teach you how to design repeating patterns along a length of fabric.
You will begin the week with an introduction to the practical screen-printing process where you’ll have the chance to create a collection of samples. After showing you the work of some of the most remarkable past and present print designers, Nicola will guide you through collecting ideas and resources to transform and develop into motifs and repeat patterns. You’ll experiment with composition and scale before cutting a stencil.
Once your stencil is ready Nicola will teach you about the history and use of natural dyes before you learn how to mix dye pastes to form your own palette. As the printing technique is mastered you will work on more complex patterns. Nicola will also introduce you to colour separation and teach you how to create multi-coloured prints.
Once you have printed a length of fabric you will develop it into the finished item of your choice. The outcome of this week will be either a hemp-silk throw or a tablecloth and set of napkins, that has been screen-printed with your own design.
