11 May 2019, Embroidered Portrait workshop with Susie Vickery, London, UK

£160.00 GBP

Saturday 11 May 2019, 11-5, £160 includes a light lunch.

Hosted by Susie Vickery

Susie worked for over twenty years as a costumier for theatre and film in the UK and Australia, specialising in nineteenth century men’s tailoring. Over the last two decades she has built expertise in two further areas: development work and fine art embroidery. She is a craft consultant for income generation projects in India,
Nepal, Tibet, Myanmar and Turkey, responding to local materials and artistic traditions. Susie has run workshops for USAID in Tibet, the Smithsonian in China, the British Council in Nepal, and the Wellcome Trust in India, Nepal and Mexico.
She has been a mentor artist for projects with women’s groups in informal settlements in Mumbai, in rural Nepal, and with indigenous Mexicans and Australians, making art with recycled and local materials. Her work is the inspiration for her embroidered animations, automata and textile pieces.

In this workshop Susie will teach how to embroider a portrait using free form straight stitch. Beginning with a sample image, you will learn the technique of sketching with thread. Then you will be able to start embroidering an image of your choosing. Susie will explain how to transfer the image onto the cloth using a light box and then use the techniques already learnt to interpret your portrait.

You will also experiment with different thicknesses of thread to see the variety of effects able to be achieved.

Please bring with you:
• A portrait/photograph of a person’s face that you would like to embroider.
• A printout of the photograph where the face is approx 10cms high. (The copy can be
black and white but you will need to bring a colour version to work from)
• Thread clippers or small scissors
• Your favourite embroidery needles
• A thimble if you use one
• Any embroidery threads that you love

All other materials are provided.
