16 March 2019, Stitched Pictures with Janet Bolton, London, UK

£130.00 GBP

Saturday 16 March 2019, 11-5, £130 includes a light lunch.

Taught by Janet Bolton

Janet Bolton composes textile pictures using the simplest of hand-sewing techniques. Her inspiration comes from visual experience, memory, imagination and the material itself. With every piece Janet is led by the placement of each evocative element within a composition.

The emphasis of this workshop is to give students a comprehensive introduction to this direct way of working with your material and your idea. Although there will not be time to completely finish a piece, all necessary aspects – including the presentation and framing of the work – will be covered.

The day starts with a short talk by Janet, who will go through the process of choosing your subject matter, composing directly with the fabric to hand and allowing the work to develop as it progresses. Questions are invited and encouraged at any time and Janet will have with her examples of her work to help illustrate the method she uses.

This will be followed by a practical demonstration of constructional methods; simple cutting of shapes, placing, and 'needle turning' techniques. All work is done with hand-sewing.

Janet will be there to offer individual help to each student, the main emphasis of which is to give complete confidence in the execution and development of your own ideas.

The day will close with a group discussion on the works in progress.

For this course you will need:

General sewing kit (needles, pins, scissors etc)
Coloured threads, sewing machine reels, cotton or polyester.
Fabrics – as wide a range as possible of bits and pieces. The important factor should be that they are not too heavy in weight and thin enough to be turned under without too much bulk.
Any buttons, beads, bits and pieces, broken necklaces etc.
Simple imagery for personal inspiration and an open mind as to subject matter with one or two ideas to be considered.

Janet will bring a selection of fabric pieces with which to extend your palette.
