Chateau Dumas, week-long workshop, prices from €1975
Hosted by Mandy Pattullo
Mandy Pattullo trained as a surface designer and teacher and now works from a studio based at The Hearth Arts Centre, a converted manse in the Northumberland countryside. Mandy makes textile collages which bring together old and often disintegrating fabrics, which she patches together and embellishes with hand stitching. These collages can be stand alone pieces, applied to garments, or collected within the pages of an artist’s book. For the last ten years Mandy has developed a practice based on referencing historical textiles and traditional techniques, and in nearly all her work she uses fragments of discarded north country quilts. Through preserving discarded and overlooked textiles and refashioning these in to new patchworks, she asks the viewer to re-examine fabrics that have become flawed through wear and tear, and to find in them a new beauty.
Mandy Pattullo loves to work with fabrics that are old or tell a story. She returns to Chateau Dumas this summer to share her new approaches to textile collaging with historical textiles and techniques. Join Mandy for a week of relaxed hand stitching where you will build beautiful art works using locally sourced French finds. She will share her latest passion for combining cross stitch patterns taken from old samplers with the unpickings of old quilts. Her technique of making drawings from early American needlework patterns will help you to develop your expertise in using embroidery imaginatively, and sometimes combining it with appliqué. Many of us collect old lace but do not know how to use it. During the week Mandy will show you how to display and use fragments of antique lace within the format of an artist’s book. There will also be a woad dyeing day and you are encouraged to bring a garment, or purchase one from a local market, that you can dye and use as a surface for experimentation. Mandy will demonstrate how to work the garment using less structured stitching, as well as with patching and darning techniques inspired by Boro textiles. Join Mandy to see her demonstrations, work with inspiration materials, and develop a unique visual language using time-worn textiles.
Students should bring: A garment that can be embellished and customised. This should be pure cotton or linen so that it can be woad dyed on the Wednesday. Some garments should be available to purchase from Lizzie or Fabienne. The garment could be for a child.
