Virtual workshop, hosted on Zoom by Abduljabbar Khatri (SIDR Craft)

The Khatri brothers started SIDR craft in 1992, in an attempt to revive the lost high-quality Bandhani craft technique. Today, this craft organisation includes an in-studio dyeing team, and over 300 women artisans. Designs are often developed in collaboration with designers and artists, though they also experiment with patterns, colours, and layouts to develop their own design aesthetic. Once finalised, designs are traced onto fabric and distributed to the artisans across villages in Kutch for tying. Once the tied pieces come back to the studio, they are dyed in-house. Today, SIDR craft has helped revive this art form and create truly exquisite Bandhani products, as well as helping hundreds of women to earn an income.

Abduljabbar Khatri from Kutch Gujarat will conduct the Bandhani workshop showing the technique of tying the sections of a fabric tightly with thread (thread resist) and then dyeing the fabric and then untying the fabric to show the design. In addition to tying, the participants will also learn to naturally dye their Bandhani piece with madder root.

Outline of the workshop

• You will be introduced to the basic tie-dye skills of Bandhani craft, Kutch (India)
• A brief history of Bandhani craft and our community through traditional Bandhani pieces.
• Learn how to pinch the fabric and tie it into knots with thread
• Create you own Bandhani silk scarf.
• Working with basic materials like thread, a tube and fabric to create tied pieces of your own designs.
• Learn how to trace your own designs on fabrics and dresses.
• Create different finesse of dots using threads of different thickness.
• Introduction to natural dyeing with madder using alum as mordant.

Materials list (not provided)
Fabric: silk , cotton, or any dyeable materials
Fine thread: 100 to 120 count
Removable pen or pencil to draw designs onto the fabric
Dyes: either natural or synthetic to dye fabric during the workshop
