Location: The Artworkers' Guild, 6 Queen Square, Holborn, London WC1N 3AT
Hosted by Claire Wellesley-Smith
Claire Wellesley-Smith is an artist, writer and researcher based in Bradford, West Yorkshire. She specialises in projects that use local, natural colour, created from home-grown and locally foraged plants. Dyes and stitches on reclaimed cloth are used in slow processes that allow time for consideration of methods of production and narratives of use. Claire uses archival research as the starting point for her work, looking at locations and community stories. Her projects are often community-based and explore the ways that place, heritage and memory can connect people to their surrounding environment. Her book, Slow Stitch: Mindful and Contemplative Textile Art was Published in 2015 (Batsford) and she is currently working on her second book (also for Batsford).
Outline of the workshop
This hand-stitch course explores ideas around textile as a daily practice. Claire has been working on a daily stitch journal for 8 years: at the start of her project she described it as having, 'No rules, no projected outcome. A record of days, but not a daily record.' She will be bringing this work to show and to share the story. Participants will begin to develop ideas for their own daily stitching practice using simple repetitive hand stitching. There will be opportunities to talk about ideas including thinking through making and the wellbeing benefits of this aspect of textile practice.
