Woven Threads works with two locally foraged non-timber forest products: \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHiam\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, the Himalayan stinging nettle (\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGirardinia diversifolia\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e), which produces a naturally pale fibre, and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEh-tsou\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, the Orange wild rhea plant (\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDebregeasia longifolia\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e), which yields a warm brown fibre. Used together, these bast fibres are known as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eElloiniu\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e in the Khaimmuingan dialect of Noklak district.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEach fibre is traditionally harvested and prepared by hand before being spun and woven on the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003eloin loom, or backstrap loom\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. The resulting textiles reflect both the character of the materials and the skill required to transform them into cloth, while a zero-waste approach keeps the process closely connected to the resources of the surrounding landscape.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor Woven Threads, this is a form of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003eliving heritage\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e: sustaining Indigenous knowledge and artisanal skills while allowing them to evolve through contemporary design.
