7 April 2018, Painted Calico with Sarah Campbell, London, UK
Saturday 7 April, 11-5, £130 includes a light lunch
Taught by Sarah Campbell
Sarah Campbell has spent a lifetime creating pattern; with her late sister Susan Collier, she co-founded Collier Campbell in 1979. Since then she has successfully developed Sarah Campbell Ltd; she regularly paints and makes designs for West Elm and Michael Miller fabrics in the US, and has a licensed ceramic collection, Viva, in the UK.
A one-day workshop to explore and experiment with painting pattern directly onto cloth – calico or linen – using fabric inks and paints which can then be iron-fixed to remain colour and light-fast.
We'll use the start of the day to loosen up, making marks on paper, and aim to end up having enough fabric to make into an easy summer top, a cushion or a table-cloth, or a variety of pieces to sew or patch together or simply enjoy.
All abilities and ages are welcome – students often tell me they've not touched a paintbrush for years, or they can't draw, but I've never found anyone who can't make something lovely.
Cloth, inks, some brushes, auto-fade pens, ideas and encouragement will be provided.
It's a good idea to bring:
A pencil and sketchbook with you,
A few colours of gouache,
Brushes if you have some you like to use,
References – colour, pattern, fabric – that you love and might want as a starting point.
All the materials are provided; this class is suitable for beginners.
