4 November 2017, Design for Hand Knitting with Sasha Kagan, London, UK
Saturday 4 November, 11-5, £130 includes materials and a light lunch
Taught by Sasha Kagan
Sasha is a pattern designer for hand-knits, maker of collectable hand knitted pieces, a teacher and author of seven books on textile design. She studied printmaking at the Royal College of Art in London, and now lives in the inspirational Mid Wales landscape. A pioneer in the Knitwear Revolution of the 1970s, she has long been an advocate of pieces made by the human hand. Her mission is to elevate the craft of hand-knitting into a widely recognised art form. Her exhibition at the V&A Museum in 2000 bears witness to this aim.
Working with Sasha’s help and using graph paper, pencils and inspiration from nature, you will learn how to interpret leaves and flowers into design motifs for hand-knitting. When a design has been selected, Sasha will teach her “woven in intarsia” technique so you can knit up a swatch from your design. Sasha will advise on colour, texture and how to turn the swatch into a repeat design to make your own original hand knitted fabric.
A large palette of yarn in 4ply and DK weight will be provided, as well as pencils and graph paper.
Please bring your own knitting needles: 3.25mm, 3.75mm and 4mm, scissors and a tapestry needle. You are welcome to bring your own inspiration in the form of postcards, photographs, seed catalogues, drawings etc.
Students must be able to knit and purl, some experience with colour work will be an advantage.
