Virtual Workshop, hosted on Zoom, by Gabriela Martínez Ortiz
Gabriela Martínez Ortiz, designer and textile artist, is creator of Ofelia & Antelmo, a textile art project that studies hand embroidery. Ofelia represents community, the work of a cooperative of women to make handmade garments designed to be one-size-fits-all, reversible and timeless. Antelmo represents Gabriela’s personal creative journey as the clothes become canvases where she explores techniques, supports, fabrics, textures and colours. Together they form a family of textile pieces where each one is unique and informs the making of the next garment.
A self-taught embroiderer since 2014, her work is governed by the philosophy of the Slow Movement, a cultural revolution that aims to calm human activities, a reaction against speed by valuing enjoyment and savouring life. Ofelia and Antelmo is more than a brand, a lifestyle that invites slower living.
Outline of the workshop
You will learn to hand embroider the three stitches Gabriela uses in her work: rice stitch, the fan stitch and the reverse stitch; and how they can be used to create surface patterns and manipulate fabrics for garment construction.
This workshop will begin with a short introduction of Gabriela and her work. She will show some of her images, garments and sketches which inspire her pieces as well as the Slow Movement philosophy that underpins her work.
At the end of the course you will have learnt how to use these three stitches to embellish handmade clothes to start working on any garment you have in your closet.
