The hand-hooked rugs are completely unique— no two are alike and each one is a celebration of the artist's creative voice. To create these rugs, Multicolores artists hook strips of fabric into thousands of loops of colour, like painting with textiles. Combining motifs from traditional weavings with their own imagination, Multicolores artists create vibrant artworks that are evocative of Maya culture and strikingly contemporary. Each rug is made from dozens of recycled secondhand garments, mostly t-shirts: an environmentally friendly, innovative material that reduces textile waste in artists' communities.Outline of the workshopYou will learn how to design and hook a rug the Maya way. Multicolores artists will guide you through the entire creation process: design, colour combinations, preparing materials, and hooking technique. Artists will begin by demonstrating their own work and the Mayan handwoven textiles that inspire them. You will learn about the Multicolores design philosophy: how to create vibrant, exciting artwork using original templates, freehand drawing, and bold colour combinations. Once your design is sketched out, you will review the best techniques for cutting your material into strips that are ready to hook. Environmental stewardship is a pillar of Multicolores work, so we invite you to recycle or up-cycle secondhand clothing to use as your raw material, as our artists do. Finally, you will learn the hooking technique, including important do's and don'ts. By the end of the workshop, you will have a completed design and you will have begun hooking your artwork!Materials list (not provided)
