Austria, Haslach, World Wide Weaving: An exhibition on digital jacquard handloom, Textile Centre Haslach, until 2 October 2022
On now until 2 October 2022
This summer, The Textile Centre Haslach in Austria opens a special exhibition put together by the Danish weaver Lise Frolund in spring 2022.
The six artists Wen-Ying Huang/Taiwan, Lia Cook/California, Monique van Nieuwland/Australia, Belinda Rose/Scotland, Grethe Sørensen and Lise Frølund/Denmark are considered pioneers of a new form of expression and work in the field of modern textile design. Together they look back on more than 250 years of experience in the field of hand weaving, half of which they have worked intensively on digital hand jacquard looms.
The six weavers were pioneers in the technique. They have explored its possibilities for decades and have inspired and influenced many younger weavers. The exhibition does not show the great works, some of which can be found in museums and collections, but describes them to understand how the loom is used, how the development process takes place and what possibilities and limitations the technology offers. It is the diverse intentions, rehearsals, working methods and materials that become visible. In addition to fabrics, handle samples and photos, there is also a video in the exhibition that provides insights into the studios of the 6 artists with a soundtrack created by the Danish composer Hanne Raffnsoe.
