Brazil, Yaritsu Waura / Instituto Xepi, Handwoven Mat
Mat made by the artisan Yaritsu Waura. It is a unique piece.
Our mats started to be produced by our ancestors to cover food, medicinal mixtures and to handle the cassava mass. They are only craft by women.
The base is hand weaving with Buriti dried spines. Then, Yaritsu created a beautiful pattern with cotton threads. These motifs we call Xepi art, inspired by our traditional roots and have the inuence of contemporary interventions. We look mainly to the animal's textures and forms, such as shes, snakes, ants, and also graphics from our millenary Ritual Kayumãi.
Our artisans have total freedom to decorate as they feel the objects.
