Egypt, Takatof Foundation, Basket with leather handles
Kendaka started working in the isolated community of Badr City, unveiling the creativity of its residents. Women mastered crochet and Kendaka introduced textile scraps to be upcycled with crochet, and this basket is one of the products that was created from this collaboration. Upcycling textile has added much value to their mastering technique, crochet, it has opened a market for the women artisans of Badr City, and at the same time managed to create a textile upcycling team of artisans, that is being shaped into a collaborative production model.
Product creation goes through different steps managed by women, namely piece making, sewing and finishing it, quality control, coordination and product development. The final product goes through several hands, enhancing technical, artistic and entrepreneurial skills on the way.
We upcycle the textile leftovers of clothing workshops and textile factories. We sort them by colors, textures and usage, and then we crochet them into this basket, with varying shades of colour. Textiles could be pure cotton, or a mix of cotton, natural and synthetic fibres, or silf at times. Leather leftovers are upcycled into the basket handles.
