With over 100,000 hours of female labour, 30,000 coral pieces, and 2,000 contributors, the Austrian Satellite Reef is a retort to the modernist obsession with “individual genius.” For this installation, artists Christine and Margaret Wertheim collaborated with Schlossmuseum Linz to design a suite of crochet reefs based on Upper Austrian folk-art traditions. The exhibition contains a selection of Crochet Coral Reef works by the duo and their “Coral Reef Contributors,” showcasing art that is collectively produced on a scale rarely seen, dynamically illustrating mathematical underpinnings of textile craft.
