Danakil scarf by Sabahar PLC (ETHIOPIA)
This product is 10% hand spun eri silk, and 90% 40/1 cotton thread. It is woven on a traditional, 2 shaft loom. The emphasis of the scarf is colour - to allow the wearer to display a richness of colour that is as interesting as its namesake - the Danakil Depression of Ethiopia. This area in the eastern part of the country is famous for its hot pools where the mineral content of the rocks and water creates amazing colours and hues. The technique that was new for the weavers was to leave some weft space around the lines of silk, to create lightness of the product. Using 40/1 warp and weft also ensured a light, easy to wear scarf. Over the years we have produced more than 10 variations of the danakil scarf in a wide range of colours, and they continue to be one of our best sellers globally. The small line of colored cotton at the bottom and the warp threads are dyed in reactive dyes. Dimensions 45 x 200 cm. Dispatch time 2-4 weeks.
