England, Lark & Bower, Obel
Product name: OBEL (A4)
Type of product: Off-loom handwoven artwork
Description (story of the item):
Study of a 'hopsack' structure, wound and woven off-loom, on birch plywood.
Using only waste yarn and a needle and thread, this piece explores the 'over and under' of woven structure, whilst playing with the contrast between matte and shine.
Adding a stripe to the warp and the weft adds a new level to the simple hopsack structure, creating the appearance of steps within the design. This is something I love about woven structure - you only need to change one thing, the yarn, the thickness, the colour, a stripe, and the fabric changes completely.
The yarns used in this piece are repurposed silk and linen. As with all of the pieces in this collection, only waste yarn has been used.
Some of the mill waste yarn I use comes from a supplier in Manchester, which takes job-lots of dead stock or surplus yarn from mills that are either shutting down, discontinuing yarns or would otherwise be throwing them into landfill.
I also approach local mills in Suffolk, and take some of their end cones of yarn. Once yarn gets down to a certain level on the cone, it no longer works in warping machinery, and often ends up in the bin. The small amounts left on the cone are plenty for a small time weaver like me!
This piece was made at home, during lockdown, listening to true crime podcasts and BBC 6 Music. Making these pieces has been a very welcome therapy throughout the pandemic.
‘Obel’ is named after Agnes Obel whose music is the perfect pairing to hours of peaceful handwork and a welcome temporary distraction from the news during the pandemic.
This piece took approximately 4 days to weave, using only needle and thread.
PLEASE NOTE - This piece does not come framed. These pieces are sold without frames, to leave the choice of framing to their new owners.
