Product name: PATRI (A6)
Type of product: Off-loom handwoven artwork
Description (story of the item):
Study of a 4/4 twill structure, made with un-dyed natural fibres.
This piece was wound and woven off-loom, by hand with needle and thread during the 2020 covid lockdowns, when I had no access to my loom or studio. I had to find another way to weave, away from the loom.
I started using small pieces of cardboard and left over yarn to weave studies of my favourite weave structures; twills, hopsacks, herringbone, dogtooth, waffle. I soon moved onto a wooden base, and continued to make these small, time consuming offerings long after I regained access to my loom.
Weaving off-loom was therapeutic during the most uncertain moments of the pandemic, a welcome distraction from the news.
These little studies are magical to weave, and are a great way to get to grips with woven structure, and in turn to gain a better understanding of how our clothing is made, both now and thousands of years ago.
The ’twill’ structure is ancient, and weaving in general has been used for thousands of years all over the world to make cloth used for garments, bedding, boat sails, bags, carpets, art, upholstery - weaving is also used to make harder materials for items such as baskets, fences and weather proof roofing.
Since the industrial revolution and especially now in our modern culture of fast fashion we have somewhat forgotten about craftsmanship and the origins of how, where and who made our clothes.
These pieces celebrate woven structure as an art form in its own right, and shine a spotlight on the craftmanship and skill of the makers, who still play an integral role in the textile industry today.
All of the pieces in the collection are woven using either industry waste yarn or sustainable natural fibres.
PLEASE NOTE - This piece does not come framed. These pieces are sold without frames, to leave the choice of framing to their new owners.
