Nigel Hurlstone: The Wind from the Feet of the Dead

Nigel Hurlstone presents a deeply personal and visually arresting body of work exploring identity, illness, and the fragile boundaries between life and death. Life-sized photographic portraits, layered with silk organza and disrupted by precise machine stitch, evoke the illusion of clarity while deliberately obscuring it. Drawing from vintage clothing, archival imagery, and his own lived experience of chronic illness, Hurlstone confronts masculinity, vulnerability, and memory with quiet intensity. Through performance, writing, and stitched image, Hurlstone unravels heroic archetypes and turns the gaze inward, questioning what remains when status and certainty fall away. This exhibition is an act of remembrance, resistance, and radically tender self-exposure.
