Finland, Waveweaver's Wool / Hannele Köngäs, Black damask bag of horse hair
Product name: Black damask bag of horse hair
Type of product: Handbag
Description (story of the item):
This bag has almost invisible pattern, black in black. It`s hand woven with damask loom, where you pull up by hand the pattern shafts to build the motif. When the light hits the surface of the fabric the pattern comes visible.
To weave horse hair is very slowly, max 4 cm / hour. You put every horse hair by hand to the shed and you must keep an eye, which way you put the straw, every second in different direction.
The history of this type of bags is long, it goes back to the Scandinavian Viking age. Handles could then be of wood, bone or horn and the bag itself was of tanned leather or fur. The Sàmì people reserved the model of the bag in their handicraft bags until beginning of 20th century. My roots are in Lapland and the bag itself has fascinated my mind over 20 years, since my sister made the first horn handles.
Hand woven in damask technique, warp black cotton yarn, weft black Finnish horse hair. Lining is of black silk fabric. Handles are of reindeer bone dyed with onion scales.
Measurements / size:
W 14 cm x H 18 cm. Bone handles 13 cm x 2,5 cm.
