Guatemala, Multicolores/ Rosmery Elizabeth Pacheco, "Friendship is That Which Connects Us" Hand-Hooked Rug
This hand-hooked work of art was designed and crafted by Rosmery Elizabeth Pacheco, member of the Totonicapán rug-hooking group. Rosmery lives in Chijax, Totonicapán, a K'iché Maya community in the highlands of Guatemala.
The artists of Multicolores began learning the rug-hooking technique in 2011. Rug-hooking is a traditional folk art not native to Guatemala. In their design process, artists blend ancestral motifs drawn from backstrap weavings, inspiration from the natural world, and their own imagination. The result is contemporary works of textile art that evoke both their Maya heritage and their individual creative voice. This piece is unique and the design is entirely the result of the artist's creative vision.
This rug is made from recycled secondhand clothing, known in Guatemala as 'paca,' on hand-woven cotton base cloth, with a hand-stitched binding. This rug was made using 90-100 recycled garments, which are washed and cut into strips before being incorporated in the design.
Rosmery describes her inspiration for this design: "This rug was inspired by my experience [as a teaching artist] on the rug-hooking tour- such an unforgettable time, full of joy, connection, and new friendships between Guatemalans and our foreign visitors. We worked together in pairs, learning and sharing about each others' lives. We asked each other questions that began to foster connections: what kind of pets do you have? How old are your children? We spent our days in a lovely, tranquil garden in the town of Santiago Atitlán. This design is based on the beautiful traje (traditional Maya dress) of Santiago, which is famous for its embroidered birds. The corte (skirt) depicts people in geometric form, representing all of us sharing space, conversation, and community during the tour. Around the traje, I added a green and blue border to represent the gardens and lake that provided us with a beautiful view."
