Online workshop, hosted on Zoom by Lauren MacDonald
Lauren MacDonald is a multidisciplinary designer, writer, and the founder of the textile studio Working Cloth. Her approach and aesthetic have been tempered through academic studies in Material Culture and Textile Science, vocational experience in the fashion industry, and an ongoing obsession with materiality, form, and function. Her practice is focused on traditional textile handcrafts and spans interaction design, installation, sculpture and stitched form. Her first book In Pursuit of Color: From fungi to fossil fuels: uncovering the origins of the world's most famous dyes was released in July 2023.
Outline of the workshop
Over two 3-hour sessions (and some homework) you will learn everything you need to create your own handmade quilt.
You will be guided through the cutting and patchwork process for strip piecing and improvisational patchwork based on one of three quilt patterns: Railfence, Nine Patch, and Sash. Throughout the workshops, we'll be working on a sample that you will patchwork, baste, hand quilt, and bind. You'll learn how to create a block, then prepare and baste a quilt ready for hand stitching. At the end of this session, Lauren will show you how to make binding which will be your homework for the following class.
In the second session, we'll start hand quilting. We will be practising big stitch quilting using cotton sashiko thread and will discuss other kinds of hand and machine quilting. Then Lauren will show you how to trim and bind your quilt, and we'll discuss quilt labelling and care. You'll leave the workshop with a finished sample, ready to make a full-sized quilt on your own time.
