India, Khamir Craft Society, Raath Kharad Rug
Product name: Raath Kharad Rug
Type of product: Desi Wool Kharad Rug
Description (story of the item): This carpet is made from Kutch’s indigenous desi wool and organic Kala cotton (it has a 30% warp of indigenous cotton and 70% weft of desi oon) using the Kharad weaving technique. It is handwoven on one of the most basic and ancient semi-nomadic looms by Babubhai Padhiyar. The carpets woven on this loom are produced with their front facing downwards, which means the artisan has to rely on a mirror which is strategically placed beneath the loom to observe the design.
Inspired by the pattern of the swirling stars in Kutch’s starry night skies, this Kharad rug is made using a night-sky-inspired colour palette.
Product note: This rug is made in Kandherai village, a traditional rug making village of Kutch for many years.
Materials: Kutch’s indigenous desi wool (from the Patanwadi sheep breed)
Measurements / size: 2 x 6 feet
