India, Khamir Craft Society, Set of 2 - Varsad Handwoven Desi Wool Cushion Cover
Product name: Set of 2 - Varsad Handwoven Desi Wool Cushion Cover (KHCU105)
Type of product: Handwoven and naturally dyed cushion cover - sold as a pair
Description (story of the item): Inspired by the traditional dhablo (traditional hand woven shawls), this cushion cover is hand woven by Marwada Jaku Rama, an artisan from Kutch, using Kutch’s characteristic style of weaving, which includes creating intricate, stylised motifs by hand picking in thick yarns of the wool. A closer look reveals hidden narratives in their design and patterning -- vakhiyo and dholki -- which are evocative of the communities who wore them, and replicative of the shapes of musical instruments, and other rural images. Before being woven and stitched into the final product, the yarn was handspun and hand dyed, using natural indigo, thereby sustaining the once traditional and almost extinct skills of natural dyeing and hand spinning.
This in turn, helps create a cohesive value chain right from the Patanwadi sheep to its breeding and herding to the shearing, weaving, spinning and dyeing, all of which tie together various artisanal communities and also revive traditional livelihoods such as pastoralism.
