Description (story of the item):
This collectible Therukadiera Shawl is a ‘prestige cloth’ conferred upon a Chakhesang Naga couple that has offered their first ‘Feast of Merit’ to invoke peace and reconciliation for the community. It honours the virtue of generosity.
It is woven by skilled indigenous women of the Chakhesang tribe in the mountains of Northeast India, on back strap looms. This natural cotton white shawl is woven in four strips that are sewn together with a decorative ridged seam, using a porcupine quill and thick cotton yarn.
Naga tribal textiles represent the gender, identity and role of the wearer, together with their stature in the community.
Indigenous women of the Chakhesang tribe in Nagaland, Northeast India, exclusively weave this traditional shawl in cotton exclusively for ARTISANS’ Gallery.
