India, Qasbi, Traditional Chandrokhani Shawl
Product name: Chandrokhni (Shawl)
Type of product: Chandrokhani shawl to the bride as a sign of good luck and to honour the bride’s welcome to her new home.
Description (story of the item): Chandrokhni, meaning full moon. Traditionally this used to be the most special piece of textile for the women in Khatri community. The mother-in-law gifts the Chandrokhani shawl to the bride as a sign of good luck and to honour the bride’s welcome to her new home. This carries the most intricate level of bandhani to match the special occasion.
But the tradition was lost over the last few decades. And I have been re-creating these special pieces with high level of intricacy for the modern customer.
The grey field area of the shawl has a central full moon, considered as a very auspicious symbol in the Islam religion. Circling the moon is the field of dots and a scrolling vine pattern. Surrounding the grey field are abstract triangle patterns and wave patterns. While the border areas of the shawl are adorned with the abstract 8-pointed star patterns in red dots and black background, that contrasts the grey field area.
