All piezas are made on a pedal loom using the tapestry weaving techinque. Porfirio Gutierrez studio revolves around the efforts of family and community, expressing an understanding and a vision that is deeply rooted to his Zapotec culture. Him and his family are the last few families that are still proctice and have the widowm of using natural dyes in his cummunity in Teotitlan del Vell, Oaxaca, Mexico. Each artwork is an expression of the convergence of the two worlds in which Porfirio’s soul dwells. The ancient world where he finds comfort and strength in materials that are traditional, simple, and honest. The modern America evokes a new interpretation of the ancient symbols that are at the base level of his psyche. He seeks to impart a tactile sense of order and peace through the use of natural media and simplified imagery that are unmistakably evolved from both his indigenous roots and urban life. Gutierrez’s work brings awareness to a profound spiritual belief that nature is a living being, sacred, and honored. The natural materials he employs in his work reflect that belief with a specific vocabulary of hues and textures.Porfirio and his famiy are the last few families that still using the ancient proctice of natural dyeing.
