Laos, Ock Pop Tok, Katu Star Line Bag
This bag was woven by Katu artisans in the Salavan Province, located in the southern part of Laos. The Katu weave on backstrap looms and incorporate beading in their
weaving. Ock Pop Tok works with Katu artisans through its Village Weavers Project. Skilled weavers and cotton growers, they needed help reintroducing natural yarns and dyes back into the production of their textiles. As with many communities that have little access to secure markets, the incentive to work with costly materials is low, and weavers turn to cheaper and easier options and start using synthetic materials. Many of OPT's projects start by reintroducing natural fibres and dyes, then OPT buys the product and thus demonstrates that there is value in working with high quality materials. By invitation of the Lao National Tourism Administration on (LNTA), our team journeyed to the south to embark on a series of trainings that would build skills and confidence in working with natural yarns and dyes. Dimensions 36 x 40 cm. Made by Tai Lue artisans part of the Village Weavers Project. Dispatch time 20 days.
