Handmade palm basket. A traditional coil-technique and palm leaf was used to make this basket. The fibre is sustainably sourced from indigenous 'Makalani' palm trees. Indigenous dye plants, for example local species of Indigo, are used to produce the colours. Kavango baskets come from one of Namibia's northernmost regions, named after the river that provides the lifeline for the communities that live here. They practice subsistence fishing, pastoralism and agriculture, millet and sorghum grains being their staples. Traditionally women made functional baskets for harvesting, winnowing and storing the grain. From these beginnings, colourful contemporary designs and constantly evolving patterns have been developed. Artisan Justina Kandjara. Dimensions 30 x 30 x 11cm. Dispatch time 6-14 days.
