Lia Blouse II by Gabriela Martínez Ortiz, Ofelia & Antelmo (Mexico)
Hand embroidered blouse
Garment designed to protect the body of the wearer. Made with great love and quality materials so - with the necessary care - it can last and be inherited. This piece is a record of a way of seeing life through the slow making.
Made in Mexico City by the hands of Gabriela Martínez (fabric cutting, embroidery and detalis), Julia de la Cruz (embroidery) and Teresa Gomez - (Sewing machine)
Contemporary piece/ Its construction is inspired by traditional clothing that is based on the union of geometric modules that wrap and tell stories.
Unique piece - This composition will be only reproduced once.
Timeless, genderless, one-size-fits-all, and reversible. It can be worn 4 different ways.
This is one of the 8 pieces that were made during the quarantine. / The special thing about this series of garments is that they were made based on the materials that were available. Given the confinement and that everything was closed, the ideas had to be adapted to what was left at the studio.
Gabriela Martínez Ortiz, (MEX) is a designer, and textile artist, the creator of Ofelia & Antelmo, a textile art project that studies hand embroidery. Inspired mainly by nature, her visual proposal is the result of the observation and exploration of organic forms through the repetition of patterns. Her work is governed by the philosophy of the Slow Movement, a cultural revolution that aims to calm human activities. A reaction against speed by valuing processes, enjoyment and savoring life through the art of slow-making.
For the embroidery of garments, Gabriela has collaborated for some years with two women who have been embroidering since they were girls. Urban Artisans, since they had to leave their hometowns and come to the city in search of a better life. This collaboration allows them to work from home, in their own time and under a system that is mostly interested in a fair payment.
This piece was mainly embroidered by Julia de la Cruz, she is been part of the Ofelia & Antelmo´s embroidery team since 2018. Originally from a small town called Chalingo in the state of Hidalgo. She is 40 years old and lives with her three children in Ecatepec, State of Mexico. Before the pandemic, she was working as a domestic worker in different houses around the city and she also makes textile craft. Julia discovered hand embroidery when she was 8 years old, self-taught for a school project. The things she enjoys the most are embroidering and cooking.
