Surrounded by the creativity and quiet discipline of her mother—a textile designer and teacher—she grew up amongst threads, books and the familiar atmosphere of a working studio.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis early immersion led her to study textiles at Nottingham Trent University, where she specialised in surface design and embroidery. Following graduation, she moved into designing embroidery for the high street, alongside producing handmade evening bags stocked across London and Europe, including with brands such as Paul Smith and Erickson Beamon.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA later shift into commercial buying broadened her understanding of textiles within a global context. Through travel to Portugal, India and beyond, she gained insight into production techniques, material traditions and the wider structures that support the industry.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eToday, her practice returns to its origins. Working primarily in freehand embroidery, Kate Rickard approaches stitch intuitively, creating textured surfaces that speak of memory, place and everyday life.
