New Subscriber Gift: Apron by Volga Linen
When Theresa Tollemache travelled to Russia in the late 1980's to trace her grandmother’s family she expected to return with a complete family tree. Instead she discovered an ancient industry still producing flax products for the internal market. During this time Russia was changing dramatically, emerging from years of communism. The mills were weaving everything from heavy duty sacking for agriculture, to fine damasks for the Kremlin. Here was an opportunity to create a business by sourcing linens from a country steeped in the tradition of weaving and embroidery which was unknown outside Russia. Having established contacts with the manufacturers in some of the towns along the shores of the Volga she began with producing a small collection of bed and table linens in 1995. Since its establishment Volga Linen has continued as a family run, British company and its collection now includes European linen products and a drawn thread work range made in Russia. Linen has good ecological credentials. Flax needs less in the way of fertilizers and pesticides than most other crops – it is low input and therefore more environmentally friendly. It is also renewable with a short growing cycle, and every part of the plant is used for various purposes, meaning little waste. We have one hundred beautiful Linen bib aprons to give away worth £49.
