Nomad copper cotton throw by Sabahar PLC (ETHIOPIA)
The nomad throw is made with 40/2 dyed cotton warp, and hand spun dyed cotton weft. This product is made using 3 traditional, textile skills in Ethiopia - hand spinning cotton on a drop spindle, hand weaving on 2 shaft looms and hand stitching to join 2 pieces of cloth. However, the product is new for Ethiopia. Traditionally weavers made solid coloured blankets and clothing with undyed warps, but Sabahar introduced the idea of such throws and blankets recently. We felt the texture of traditional cloth is so lovely, that by adding contemporary colours and patterns we could attract new global markets. The hand stitching to join the 2 panels is used on traditional blankets called gabis. We have also introduced high quality heddles with 'eyes' to enable faster production. The weavers who produce these throws weave in their own homes, with all family members involved in the warp preparation, bobbin winding, and cotton spinning. The hand spun cotton weft produces a lovely soft feel and breathable warmth. The throw is a great travel companion since it can also be worn as a shawl, or alternatively used as a spontaneous picnic tablecloth. The bright colours stay vibrant after years of normal washing. Dimensions 120 x 200 cm. Dispatch time 2 weeks.
