Flora & Fauna is an ongoing project by Bokja exploring the
animal and plant kingdoms as a source of inspiration for creating
contemporary handcrafted images and motifs with embroidered
fine threads. Most of these embroidered pieces become the face
of unique cushions, bringing elements of the natural landscape
into domestic spaces, the home. In the Middle East, the use of
flora and fauna in textile is a practice which dates back over
a millennium, many times making direct references to what
paradise would be like; a lush and fruitful space.
Bokja operates out of Beirut, a city that echoes this complex
language of assemblage. The country itself is positioned between
old and new, east and west, bringing to the surface issues of
identity and impermanence. Accordingly, behind Bokja’s surface
fabrication is an underlying theme of identity; how it can be
created and collected, how it can travel and adapt, and how it
can ultimately be shared and communicated.
Bokja’s textile laboratory experiments with several techniques from
free-motion embroidery to painting. With a unique understanding
of craft, home decor and design trends, Bokja consistently expands
its knowledge base and techniques to implement into exciting new
projects.
