Thursday 2 September, 18:00 - 21:00 BST, Quiltmaking with Jennifer Raish from the United States
Thursday 2 September 2021, 18:00 - 21:00 BST (British Summer Time, GMT + 1)
Online workshop, hosted on Zoom by Jennifer Raish
Jennifer Raish is an artist and designer from the U.S who has worked primarily with textiles for about 15 years and has focused on quiltmaking since 2016. As a quilter, she gravitates to the modern improv style of quilting and makes mostly art quilts and blankets and sometimes other home goods. She draws from her diverse experience in fine art, fashion sewing, crochet, and fabric sculpture. While her aesthetic approach is rooted in her studio arts education, her understanding of textile construction methods ensures the physical integrity of her work. She uses a wide range of materials and also enjoys textile mending. After 11 years in Brooklyn, New York, she recently moved to Fehmarn, Germany - a small island in the Baltic Sea.
In this workshop, we will make quilted coasters (or small textile art) entirely by hand - no sewing machine needed! A small project like this offers a great, low-pressure way to give something new a try. You will learn the basics of quilting and experienced quilters could use this workshop as a way to test new artistic ideas, for example, fabric or colour combinations or stitching motifs.
You will begin from scratch with designing simple patchwork compositions. We will then practice quilting by hand and finish with an attractive edge stitching for a finished look. Once you are comfortable with the sewing techniques taught here, this is a simple and fast project that makes a great gift.
This workshop is open to all levels. Some experience with using needle and thread is helpful.
