This product is 65% hand spun eri silk (weft), and 35% 40/2 cotton thread (warp). It is woven on a 150 cm wide floor loom by skilled, traditional weavers. Eri silk has only been produced in Ethiopia for the last 15 years or so, and recently we have seen a rapid increase in the amount being produced. The sector depends on a growing demand for silk products such as this throw. We have introduced the spinning wheel to spin the silk, which is faster and enables the women to produce a highly consistent thread. The silk thread is entirely produced by women - from looking after the silk worms to producing the cocoons and spinning on spinning wheels. The weaving is done by men. The design is produced by using silk naturally dyed in iron. The silk weft threads for the design are dyed in coffee. Dimensions 40 x 200 cm. Dispatch time 2-4 weeks.
