Online workshop, 16:00 - 19:00 GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)
Hosted on Zoom by Karen Barbé
Karen Barbé is a Chilean designer and embroiderer based in Chicago. She is the author of Colour Confident Stitching - How to create beautiful colour palettes (2017). Her approach to the craft and colour denotes her background in design and constant exploration to inspire new ways of embroidering.
This event will consist of free access to the Meet the Maker talk by Karen Barbé introducing the technique of embroidery on paper and other semi-rigid surfaces, followed by a workshop. If you are unable to attend the online talk on 12 November, the talk will be recorded and made available to you after the event. Please allow 7 working days for us to send you the recording.
Outline of the workshop
In this workshop you will learn the technique of embroidering on paper and discover the joyful and sensorial experience of stitching through paper or other semi-rigid surfaces. During this two-session workshop, Karen will share and discuss with the participants the inspiration and challenges behind some of her paper embroidery projects.
In the first part of the workshop you will embroider on a set of postcards and learn how to prepare the paper before stitching, know suitable materials and tools for the technique, and practise different stitch variations for finishing the postcards.
In the second part of the workshop, you will explore creating your own patterns for embroidering on paper using different templates. You will work on the cover of a notebook.
At the end of the workshop you will be able to create unique pieces of contemporary embroidery using this technique on paper or other semi-rigid surfaces (notebooks covers, photographs, paper memorabilia, cardboard boxes, etc).
Level of experience
The workshop is suitable for all levels. Basic crafting skills are helpful.
